A systematic approach to cytological evaluation of central nervous system tumours
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Intraoperative consultation; Smear cytology; Central nervous system neoplasm Smear cytology has been accepted as a suitable alternative to frozen section in intraoperative consultation of central nervous system tumours. Intraoperative smears from neurosurgical specimens permit rapid and accurate diagnosis. Grading of primary tumours may not be always possible on intraoperative smears, but their division into low or high-grade lesions is highly reliable and reproducible if due attention is paid to certain parameters like nuclear atypia, mitotic figures and necrosis. A systematic approach leads to a workable preliminary diagnosis, assures adequate tissue sampling for histological processing and guides the management team to explain the prognosis to the patient party and plan optimal treatment even before the final histological diagnosis is available. The goals of the present study were to analyze the accuracy of cytological techniques for the intra-operative diagnosis of central nervous system tumors. In this study, 50 patients with brain or spinal tumor (according to the previous physical examination and imaging studies) were evaluated in the neurosurgery center of Hazrat Rasoul-e-Akram Hospital. Cytological methods including touch, sc...
متن کاملEvaluation of changes in testosterone concentration of the rat central nervous system following progesterone administration
Neurosteroids are steroids that are produced in the central nervous system (CNS). While progesterone and dehydroepiandostendione (the precursors of testosterone) are among the identified neurosteroids, it is not clear that testosterone could be considered as a neurosteroid. The testosterone synthesis has been demonstrated in the brain of castrated frog, but not in the rat brain. In the present ...

متن کاملCross-talks between the kidneys and the central nervous system in multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease, which is considered as a common autoimmune disorder in young adults. A growing number of evidences indicated that the impairment in non-neural tissues plays a significant role in pathology of MS disease. There are bidirectional relationship, metabolic activities and functional similarity between central nervous system (CNS) and k...
متن کاملReview of the Aspergillosis and Report A Case of its Central Nervous System
SUMMARY Because Aspergillus SP. are one of the most common airborne fungal contaminants in all parts of the world, the incidence of Aspergillosis is relatively high, but will not be diagnosed in some cases. In this survey we decided to review the importance of Aspergillosis and also to report a case of its Central Nervous system involvement in a patient without Immunodeficiency.
